FAQ
How much does a container cost?
€1 per container per month excluding VAT, prorated daily — or €11 per container per year on the annual plan (one month free). Each subscribed dollarbox adds capacity for one app pod, 1Gi memory, 10Gi ephemeral storage quota, and one IPv6 LoadBalancer service.
Why does my total say €1.23?
Prices exclude VAT. EU consumers pay Irish VAT at 23% on top (€1.23/month or €13.53/year per container). EU businesses outside Ireland with a valid VAT number are not charged VAT — the invoice is reverse charged (Article 196, Directive 2006/112/EC) and you account for VAT locally. Add your VAT number on the billing page. Outside the EU there is no VAT, with one exception: UK sales carry 20% UK VAT (UK signups are temporarily unavailable while our UK VAT registration completes). The exact total including any VAT is always shown before you pay.
How do I get storage that survives a container restart?
Pre-pay for a pool of GB at €0.10/GB/month and attach a Longhorn volume to your container. See Persistent volumes.
Important: If you're using kubectl mode, avoid the local-path storage class for any data you cannot afford to lose. local-path stores data on a single node and can be wiped during node upgrades or maintenance. Always use longhorn for persistent data.
Do I need billing before I deploy?
Yes. The control panel redirects you to billing before you can create containers.
Can I cancel any time?
Yes. Delete containers you no longer need. Org owners can close the org from Billing, which cancels the subscription, tears down containers, and marks the org closed.
Can I earn credit by referring someone?
Yes. Org owners get a permanent referral link on the Referrals page. When someone signs up through it, stays 30 days and pays €2 of usage, you earn €1 of account credit — one box-month — applied to your next invoice. They pay normal prices. Up to 25 rewards a year are credited automatically; self-referrals do not count. See Referrals.
Why IPv6-only?
IPv6 keeps the service simple and cheap. Each container gets a public IPv6 address. There is no public IPv4 address per container.
Can my container call IPv4-only services?
Yes. Outbound traffic to IPv4-only services uses NAT64 automatically. Your container does not need special NAT64 configuration.
The gateway is outbound-only, so it does not work the other way round: IPv4-only clients cannot reach your container through it, and there is no shared IPv4 address or IPv4 proxy on offer. To serve IPv4 clients, put your own proxy in front — see Cloudflare IPv4 proxy.
How do I point a domain at my container?
Create one AAAA record pointing to the IPv6 address shown on the container detail page. See Point a hostname at your dollarbox.
Does DollarBox terminate HTTPS?
No. Terminate TLS inside your container, run your own reverse proxy, or use kubectl mode to deploy the shape you need. DNS-01 validation is the safest Let's Encrypt option for IPv6-only services.
What images can I run?
Public Linux container images from Docker Hub, GHCR, Quay, and other public registries. Images must work with the platform restrictions: non-root, restricted security context, read-only root filesystem in simple mode, and port 80 for simple-mode HTTP services.
Are private registries supported?
Not in simple mode yet. Mirror private images to a public registry if you need to deploy them now. Private registry credentials are planned for a later phase.
What support do I get?
Documentation, the community Discord, and best-effort responses. The Discord invite is not published here; it is in the confirmation email you get when you sign up, and on your dashboard. At this price point DollarBox does not include a dedicated support team. See Support for which channel to use and what is self-service.
Where does my data live?
DollarBox is EU-hosted and GDPR-applicable. See the Privacy Policy.
Are backups included?
Not in the €1 base price — that price includes no backups at all, deliberately.
Off-site backups are a paid add-on at €0.15 per backed-up GB per month excluding VAT, enabled per volume: nightly, retention from 1 to 30 days, stored on separate hardware from your live volume, and restored self-service to a new volume. See Volume backups.
Nothing is backed up unless you enable the add-on on that specific volume, and even then it covers volume contents only — not secrets, manifests, or the ephemeral container disk. You remain responsible for your own off-site copies.
What happens if payment fails?
The org can become past due or suspended. Update the payment method from Billing to restore service.
What happens if I abuse the service?
We terminate the account and report to relevant authorities when appropriate. Abuse reports go to [email protected].
